Top 10 Favorite Attractions on Oahu – #8: Byodo-In Temple

Wait, is this Hawaii or Japan?

This temple is located on the Windward side of Oahu about 15 minutes from Kaneohe and is a replica of the Byodo-in temple in Uji, Japan.

You drive through a cemetery representing several different faiths, and the Byodo-In Temple is at the back of a valley situated against the majestic Ko’Olau mountain range. You’ll be struck by the meticulous landscaping and tranquil surroundings.  There is a large pond full of koi, in front of the temple, and a 3-ton brass peace bell to your left. It’s traditional to ring the bell before entering the temple.

The bell mesmerized my friend Ray.

Inside the temple is a 9-foot Lotus Buddah carved from wood and covered with gold and lacquer.

It’s an amazingly serene space. Allow about 45 minutes to tour the grounds.
Byodo-In Temple
Admission is $2 per person
Open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily

Take H-1 West from downtown Honolulu. Exit onto Likelike Highway and go north through the mountains. Exit onto Kahekili Highway and continue north. Turn left into the Valley of the Temples cemetery. The Byodo-In Temple is located in the back of the Valley of the Temples.

*You may recognize this temple from the tv shows Lost and Magnum P.I.

As a native to the windward side of Oahu, I have to say that this Temple is one of the BEST gems on the Island. If you are a backpacker or adventurer, this HAS to be on your list. When I travel I’m all about finding these hidden treasures. Staying at a low-priced place and getting more out of your hawaii trip during the day is the way to do it!
