The Entertainment: You would think that on such a small, secluded island there would be no entertainment but that’s not true. Hula Shores Restaurant & Bar at the Aqua Hotel Molokai offers nightly live entertainment and music from hula to disco. We had a great time at the weekly Aloha Friday Sunset Celebration just hanging out after an excellent oceanside dinner, having drinks and dancing and laughing with the locals.

The Flight: We flew Mokulele and had a small plane. Luckily we had smooth flights but you can really feel the turbulence on these smaller planes so sometimes the flight can be quite bumpy. Because you fly so low, however, you do get amazing views of the islands flying in and out so have your cameras ready!

Fundraising starts weeks before the actual walk, and Aqua’s hotels held car washes, staged a golf tournament, and sold yummy homemade grindz (including kalua pig with cabbage, chili mac, and lumpia – mmmmm).

On Oahu the walk starts at 7 am, with 8,000 participants gathered at Ala Moana Beach Park. Walkers wind 6 miles through Waikiki, getting a card stamped at each of over a dozen checkpoints. The checkpoints, sponsored mostly by area hotels, also give out water, juice, cookies, fruit, brownies, shave ice and other assorted goodies. Walkers end up back at Ala Moana Beach Park, and they present their completed stamp cards for a free lunch. It’s gladly needed after several hours in the hot Hawaii sun!

Aqua’s checkpoint was in front of Island Colony Hotel, located at the corner of Ala Wai and Seaside (and offers welcome shade after the long stretch down Ala Wai Boulevard!). Aqua provided water to walkers and runners and passersby enjoyed Hawaiian music and dancing.

On April 29, Aqua Waikiki Pearl had its first canine guest!

Pixel, a West Highland Terrier, was accompanied by her owner, Katherine. Although a bit nervous at checkin, Pixel enjoyed the comfortable doggie bed, the complimentary treats, and a toy to take with her.
